FORTHCOMING EVENTS

NORDIC WALKING IN GORING COURSE FOR BEGINNERS STARTS
A free eight week course for beginners aged 50 years or older starts at 9.30am on Monday 25 January on the Sheepcot Field. Sessions are for one hour. Poles are provided. Have appropriate footwear for walking and a coat in case of inclement weather.
Free walks for experienced Nordic Walkers start at 11am on Monday 25 January on the Sheepcot Field. Again, walks are one hour. Please bring your own poles.

BASILDON PARK NATIONAL TRUST GARDEN SPRING FLOWERS IN FEBRUARY AND MARCH 2010
Basildon Park has magnificent 18th century gardens, parkland and ancient woodland providing a tranquil oasis in which to wander and enjoy superb views during the quieter months of early spring. Thousands of snowdrop bulbs provide welcome touches of colour throughout the grounds, followed by bright yellow daffodils and buttery-coloured primroses, which grow freely amongst the grassy lawns from late February through to early May.
Spring flower guided tours take place every Friday from 12 February at 2pm, led by the Reading Natural History Group (call 0118 984 3040 to confirm walk taking place, before attending). The garden, shop and tea room are open from 10 February.

LANGTREE SCHOOL STUDENTS’ FASHION SHOW
Langtree Students’ Fashion Show is to be held on Tuesday 9 February 2010. Doors open at 6.45pm and the performances start at 7pm. Ticket prices are: Adults £2.50 and Concessions £1.50. Refreshments will be available during the interval.

GORING AND STREATLEY TWINNING ASSOCIATION VALENTINE’S EVENING TWINNING NIGHT OUT
Saturday 13 February is being planned as our ‘Twinning Night Out’, at the Shillingford Bridge Hotel to coincide with their ‘Valentine’s Evening’ Dinner Dance. The menu is still awaited but the cost is not expected to exceed £30.

EXHIBITION OF PAINTING AND SCULPTURE PAUL HOBBS’ WORK ON SHOW
A free exhibition of painting and sculpture by Paul Hobbs will be held from 6 to 12 March in St Thomas’ Church, Goring. Paul Hobbs’ work has been displayed in galleries and cathedrals across Britain. He makes both celebratory abstract paintings, and painting and sculpture that consider contemporary social issues in the light of biblical values.

WALLINGFORD COUNTRY MARKET VALENTINE SPECIAL ON 12 FEBRUARY
Wallingford Country Market opens each Friday and will be holding a ‘Valentine Special’ on Friday 12 February in the Regal Centre, Wallingford between 8.30 and 11.15am when a variety of cards, small gifts, decorations and special baked goods appropriate to the occasion will be on sale. The usual range of home baking, crafts and seasonal plants, produce and flowers will also be available.

KENTON THEATRE, HENLEY MODERN JAZZ ON SUNDAYS STARTS
The Kenton Theatre, Henley-on-Thames, is launching a season of four Sunday afternoon jazz concerts. Jazz fans can guarantee a seat at all four concerts for £45. First off on Sunday 31 January at 3pm is the Dave Stapleton Quintet. Pianist and composer Dave Stapleton is described by Jazzwise as ‘A real find for British jazz’. With Ben Waghorn on sax, Jonny Bruce on trumpet, Paula Gardiner on double bass and Elliot Bennett on drums, the quintet has released two highly acclaimed albums, and has performed at top jazz festivals across Europe. (Tickets £10 to £12.)
On Sunday 28 February it is the excellent Canadian singersongwriter Tammy Weis, who mixes jazz standards and her own beautifully crafted original songs in a repertoire that showcases a voice of depth, quality and individuality. (Tickets £10 to £12.)
